How To Register and Tax Your Used WAV

So you have just purchased a used WAV (or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) and need to register and tax it, we at Mobility Disabled will happily help you with any of these steps and hope that you will request assistance with any aspect of the sale process.

Can I tax a used WAV online?
This depends on what the V5 states as a taxation class. If the tax class that your are requesting is the same on the V5 – then yes you can tax the WAV online. We then ask you complete the V5 and we will send it to DVLA on your behalf. In roughly 6 weeks time you will receive a V5 back in your name.

What is Disabled Tax?
The majority of our used WAV will be registered as disabled. This means that it is free and does not cost any money but you will still receive reminders and still need to go through the process each year of taxing the vehicle. The WAV in this taxation class, must be registered in the disabled persons name or their nominated drivers name and it must only be used for the disabled persons personal needs. It cannot be used by the nominated driver for their own personal use and you can only have one vehicle tax exemption at any one time.

Who is Entitled to Disabled Tax?
To qualify for disabled tax you must first be eligible for
• higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
• enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
• enhanced rate mobility component ofAdult Disability Payment (ADP)
• higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment
• War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
• Armed Forces Independence Payment

What if I am not entitled to Disabled Tax?
If you, unfortunately, do not meet the requirements for disabled tax, it means that you will have to pay for vehicle tax (you can find out the cost of your vehicle tax here). In most cases, a trip to the local post office is where you will need to go in the first instance until you receive a V5 from DVLA in your name. The documents that you need to take to the post office are as follows:

• the V5C registration certificate (log book) in your name, if you have one
• your vehicle tax reminder letter (V11) if you have one
• an MOT certificate that’s valid when the tax starts, or evidence that your vehicle’s exempt from an MOT (V112)
• payment for vehicle tax (if you have to pay for your new tax class)
• an insurance certificate or cover note (only in Northern Ireland)

DVLA can (on a rare occasion) require you to complete a postal application for vehicle tax, this can take up to 6 weeks for them to process the application and is out of our hands. This can be due to vehicle tax class changes. If you have any query on vehicle tax you can contact DVLA direct on 0300 790 6802.

We hope that this clarifies any queries, feel free to get in touch if you need further help.
