Do Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles Need an MOT?

The short answer is “yes”.

Every vehicle on the road needs to pass an MOT to maintain safety standards for everyone, not just passengers, but also for other road users.

If your vehicle is more than three years old, then it needs to pass an MOT for you to be able to continue to use it, and the tests have become more stringent for WAVs.

For some time it was not necessary to inspect the wheelchair occupant safety bel or the wheelchair restraint belts, something many thought was an oversight, but this loophole has now been closed.

As well as the standard mechanical tests, all seat belts must be fitted and in full working order, all child seats and restraints will be tested and so will anchorages for securing disabled people’s belts or wheelchairs.
